Michael's
Merrimack, New Hampshire Page
This page is in the process of being updated as it hasn't been
maintained for quite some time and many things have changed in town.
General
Merrimack, New Hampshire is a large town located between
the two large (for New Hampshire) cites, Manchester to the
north and Nashua to the south. Merrimack is a growing,
residential town with some industry and good highway access
to Boston and New Hampshire's main airport in Manchester.

-
City.Net New Hampshire contains tons of NH information.

Newspapers
- The
Boston Globe is the major daily for Massachusetts
and covers New Hampshire under the Metro/Region section. It contains
in-depth world, national and local news. It is commonly available at
newstands. The Sunday Globe contains a New Hampshire section in
addition to the Metro/Region section that contains editorials from New
Hampshire residents. The help-wanted sections are usually massive too.
They also have an
online page for breaking New Hampshire news.
- The Broadcaster is mailed once a week to
Merrimack households. I find it to be chock full of ads with some
content. The paper also covers several other towns. It may be useful if
you're looking for a car as it generally has a lot of car ads in it.
- The
Concord Monitor is another major NH newspaper though the
circulation isn't as large as The Union Leader.
- The Merrimack Connection is mailed to
households every other Tuesday and has grown from a few pages to around
16 pages. The ads are tastefully done and the paper is quite
informative. Features: Community Calendar, Police Blotter, District
Court case summary, School Notes, list of Home Sales, Obituaries and
Care Care. email:
connection@isone.com.
- Merrimack Journal is a full-size paper
with a lot of local content and a nice balance of ads to content. They
have articles, editorials, classifieds and more, though not as much as
their printed paper, online.
- The
Nashua Telegraph is a daily paper for the Greater
Nashua area and does a good job at this. It doesn't provide the level
of detail that The Village Crier does but does give you a broader
perspective on the area. This paper also provides world and national
news. The Telegraph is generally available at newstands.
- The
Manchester Union Leader is a large NH daily
conservative paper with fairly good availability at newstands.
- The Village Crier was a free weekly
which did a very nice job covering the local news. It was around for
about three decades and ceased publication January 2000.
Places to visit and things to do
-
Amoskeag Fishways and Learning Center in Manchester
is run by Public Service of New Hampshire (electric utility). Things to
see are the fish ladder, a hydroelectric generator, and lots of
educational programs.
- Anheuser-Busch, Inc. on the Daniel
Webster Highway in South Merrimack. They provide free tours of the
brewery (bring a jacket) along with complimentary samples after the
tour. They have well-manicured grounds and stables for the Clydesdales.
Their number is 603-595-1202. Pictures.
- Mass/New
Hampshire/Maine things to do.
- Nashua Fish Hatchery is off of exit 6
off Route 3 opposite the Nashua Mall. They do group tours which show
young salmon in holding areas inside along with much larger fish in
areas in an enclosed outside area.
- Stonyfield
Farms has a nice tour of their yogurt factory. They
are located in Londonderry. There is a small admission fee which is
probably to cover the frozen yogurt sample at the end of the tour. The
tour begins and ends in the gift shop which has a video loop running
that describes the business. 603-437-4000.
- The Butterfly Place in Westford, MA has
been recommended on one of the mailing lists that I subscribe to. The
address is 120 Tyngsboro Road and their phone number is 508-392-0955. I
plan a visit one of these days and will post comments here.
- Wilson Farm in Litchfield. Litchfield is
across the Merrimack River and there is no quick way to get there
unless you have a boat or are a really good swimmer. Wilson Farm has
pick-your-own strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries
for a short time in the summer. They also sell local and shipped-in
produce.
Schools
Detailed information for most of the following schools is
available at The
American
School Directory. More information on public schools
is available at the Nashua Telegraph site under communities
in addition to being available at the School District's site.
The New Hampshire Curriculum Frameworks are available at the
DOE Products Page. They also have test
results by city/town.
Broadcast
Utilities
- Cable TV is currently contracted to Adelphia. They're
in the process of being sold to another company.
- Electricity is handled by Public Service of New Hampshire.
There has been much controversy over the deregulation of the electric
business recently which may result in other electricity providers in
the future. PSNH can be reached at 603-882-6911.
- Local Phone Service is from Verizon.
- Natural Gas is handled by Keyspan Energy
and they can be reached at 603-883-5565.
- Town Water is managed by the Merrimack Village District
and they can be reached at 603-424-9241. They generally bill you
quarterly for water. Some parts are served by Pennichuck Water Works
(Nashua).
- Town Sewer is managed by the town and
you'll see charges on your property tax bill if you have this service.
Some parts of Merrimack are served by the City of Nashua.
